Meteoro 2017 emergency training

In preparation for earthquakes, hurricanes, widespread drought and other emergencies, radio amateurs join in the annual training exercise called Meteoro.

The International Amateur Radio Union Region 2 Member Society, the Federacion de Radioaficionados de Cuba (FRC) in the Caribbean area was involved. The FRC claims a high proportion of membership and is the umbrella body with 180 local radio clubs that are affiliated.

Meteoro 2017 was on May 20 and 21, led by the Civil Defence Staff with radio amateurs in all areas involved. They formed part of the National Emergency Network to test radio communication systems which proved to be stable and efficient.

October traditionally is the time for hurricanes to strike Cuba in the cyclone season. The radio amateurs in the strategically placed in the Caribbean are ready should they be called upon during an emergency. Thank you to the IARU Region 2 for this information.
