Amateur Radio in Japan 1927–2027 100th Aniversary

On June 12, 1926, the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) was founded by 37 pioneering members, and a historic message was transmitted to the world:

“We have the honour of informing that we amateurs in Japan have organized today the Japanese Amateur Radio League. Please QST to all stations.”

In September 1927, the station JXAX was authorized. It was the first licensed amateur radio station in Japan. This marked the beginning of a new era.

JARL celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026, and amateur radio in Japan marks 100 years in 2027. We are entering a special 16-month commemorative period. Together with manufacturers, partner organizations, and amateur radio operators across Japan, we all are proud to announce we are celebrating this milestone and taking our first steps into the next century.

Our goal is not only to look back to the past, but to pioneer the future of the culture of Amateur Radio.

Because “normal” is just boring
We live in times where we can easily connect with people around the world.

The technology progress has made everything convenient,
but have you ever felt something is missing?
Because everything is so easy, we don’t have to look for new ways.

What we have lost by accepting this new normal
is the path of exploration or encounters with the unknown.
The exploration of new ways, it’s so exciting for us.
You want to carry your radio waves even farther,
you want to communicate with Antarctica or outer space,
you want to pursue the depths of technology to create the perfect radio.

With Amateur Radio activities, we are experiencing something that we cannot touch or even see.
So now, let’s go on adventures that are far beyond our daily lives!

That’s why “normal” is just boring.
