The Inter­na­tion­al Ama­teur Radio Union (IARU) is the world­wide fed­er­a­tion of nation­al ama­teur radio orga­ni­za­tions. The mem­ber­ship of the IARU con­sists of more than 160 mem­ber-soci­eties in as many coun­tries and sep­a­rate ter­ri­to­ries.

Thomas Wrede dis­cov­ered his pas­sion for ama­teur radio as a teenag­er, join­ing the Ger­man Ama­teur Radio Club (DARC) in 1971 at the age of 13. He earned his call­sign DF2OO in 1977 and has remained an enthu­si­as­tic oper­a­tor ever since. Thomas is known for his deep inter­est in RF and com­mu­ni­ca­tions tech­nol­o­gy, reg­u­lar­ly exper­i­ment­ing with soft­ware-defined radio plat­forms and explor­ing new mod­u­la­tion and cod­ing tech­niques. He enjoys con­tact­ing DX sta­tions on the HF and microwave bands and oper­ates five ana­logue and dig­i­tal VHF/UHF repeaters. His inter­na­tion­al expe­ri­ence includes oper­at­ing in the UK (as M0AZL) and Lux­em­bourg (as LX2OO).

 

Since 2009, Thomas has man­aged DARC’s inter­na­tion­al affairs team, rep­re­sent­ing Ger­man ama­teur radio inter­ests abroad. He is a fre­quent attendee at inter­na­tion­al ham radio exhi­bi­tions, where he meets rep­re­sen­ta­tives from many IARU (Inter­na­tion­al Ama­teur Radio Union) mem­ber soci­eties. In these roles, Thomas has active­ly con­tributed to dis­cus­sions about the future chal­lenges and oppor­tu­ni­ties of ama­teur radio, empha­siz­ing its val­ue to soci­ety. In May 2024, Thomas was appoint­ed IARU Vice Pres­i­dent and is lead­ing IARU’s spec­trum defense activ­i­ties towards WRC-27.

“Ham radio has pos­i­tive­ly influ­enced my pro­fes­sion­al career as a com­mu­ni­ca­tions engi­neer and has always enriched my life,” says Thomas, “and I am look­ing for­ward to giv­ing back by active­ly sup­port­ing the objec­tives and mis­sion of the IARU”.

With over 35 years of pro­fes­sion­al expe­ri­ence in the com­mu­ni­ca­tions indus­try, Thomas Wrede has made var­i­ous con­tri­bu­tions to satel­lite and broad­cast tech­nol­o­gy. Dur­ing his 28-year tenure at SES, a lead­ing satel­lite oper­a­tor in Lux­em­bourg, he was deeply involved in the devel­op­ment of dig­i­tal satel­lite tele­vi­sion, in-home sig­nal dis­tri­b­u­tion, dig­i­tal satel­lite radio, satel­lite return chan­nel tech­nol­o­gy, Inter­net via satel­lite, and both High Def­i­n­i­tion and Ultra High Def­i­n­i­tion (4K/8K) television.

After retir­ing in 2020, Thomas found­ed his own con­sult­ing com­pa­ny, sup­port­ing inter­na­tion­al clients in tech­nol­o­gy stan­dard­iza­tion and busi­ness devel­op­ment, par­tic­u­lar­ly in satel­lite com­mu­ni­ca­tions and wire­less technologies

Thomas cur­rent­ly rep­re­sents SES in the DVB Com­mer­cial Mod­ule (http://www.dvb.org), serv­ing as chair of the CM‑S sub­group, which focus­es on devel­op­ing com­mer­cial require­ments for new satel­lite com­mu­ni­ca­tions standards.
