Thomas Wrede discovered his passion for amateur radio as a teenager, joining the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) in 1971 at the age of 13. He earned his callsign DF2OO in 1977 and has remained an enthusiastic operator ever since. Thomas is known for his deep interest in RF and communications technology, regularly experimenting with software-defined radio platforms and exploring new modulation and coding techniques. He enjoys contacting DX stations on the HF and microwave bands and operates five analogue and digital VHF/UHF repeaters. His international experience includes operating in the UK (as M0AZL) and Luxembourg (as LX2OO).
Since 2009, Thomas has managed DARC’s international affairs team, representing German amateur radio interests abroad. He is a frequent attendee at international ham radio exhibitions, where he meets representatives from many IARU (International Amateur Radio Union) member societies. In these roles, Thomas has actively contributed to discussions about the future challenges and opportunities of amateur radio, emphasizing its value to society. In May 2024, Thomas was appointed IARU Vice President and is leading IARU’s spectrum defense activities towards WRC-27.
“Ham radio has positively influenced my professional career as a communications engineer and has always enriched my life,” says Thomas, “and I am looking forward to giving back by actively supporting the objectives and mission of the IARU”.
